The opening of AFRIKA

The opening was full of surprises… (László Darvasi got sick) but in the end it turned out to be really really nice ‹3

You can read the opening speech of MIKLÓS SZÜTS here, both hungarian and english.

A kiállítás címe: AFRIKA sem igazán segít a képek megfejtésében.

A ti Afrikátokat.

A kiállítást megnyitom.

AFRIKA

Ladies and Gentlemen,

How goes that hassid legend? Once one of the students asked the Tzadik: – Is it allowed to smoke a pipe during the reading of the Talmud? The wise rabbi answered this to him: Of course it is not. But every situation is adequate for reading the Talmud, therefore it is commendable to read the Talmud while smoking a pipe..!

Looking over Eszter Wolf’s images this piece of wisdom came to mind: Is it allowed to paint any object that enters our field of view, or is near at hand? Well it is rather not advisable. But every object that surrounds us, be it two apples, prehistoric choppers, or tiles on the wall, is remarkably suitable to be present in our paintings, losing – of course – its original meaning as an object. The choppers became teardrops, apples became roses, the interpretation of the other pictures I shall leave to you.

The title of the exhibition, AFRIKA, does not serve as much of a guideline for interpretation either. I’ve asked the author why she decided on this title, and I came to know the following: for Eszter Wolf Africa is the synonym of happiness. After further questioning she related that the reason (in my understanding) is that Africa (her personal Afrika) is reliable. If there happens to be a drought, then there is a drought 200 kms farther as well, and the world is colored yellow and ocher, as far as the eyes can see. As I said, Afrika manifests everything she has been dreaming about since her childhood: greatness and reliability.

In this short quote I attempted to explore this devotion to Africa: “We are wandering from A to B, but wherever we go there is a great drought, there is not much sense to start, still we carry on, we know that what awaits us tomorrow and the day after. All of a sudden we arrive at B, and then the rains arrive. (By that time, of course, half of the herd has perished…) I like this immensely. In this everything is alright, you see. I could go on and on for hours about Africa. I do not need to travel to Africa anymore, because what I need, my Afrika is here around me… Maybe this is what I wanted to show through these images.” (end of quote)

It’s not easy to decipher of course, as I don’t possess appropriate poetic inspiration, what kind of serenity, not to use even greater words, what kind of intimacy and love is it, that surrounds Eszter Wolf. The freedom of the

objects, the freedom of the painter, the way she treats objects, the ways she sees and shows them to us, truly conveys an inner serenity. On Eszter’s canvas the past, and time itself becomes a subject, objects that compile an aura of a human who has come to terms with the world. She is trying to convey some to her viewers, saying: “you have created a great world, Lord!”

Looking at some of Eszter Wolf’s paintings we can suspect Pilinszky’s idea of the ULTIMATE TRUST. If you have peace in yourself, there can’t be much hardship.

Come now, my friends, take a look at these paintings and discover Afrika!

Your personal Africa.

I open the exhibition.
